Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ sixth episode opens with a dream sequence, in which Percy’s former headmaster (Hiro Kanagawa) at Yancy Academy berates an unseen person who stole Zeus’ (Lance Reddick) Master Bolt. He speaks of a war on the horizon, one even greater than the imminent clash between Zeus and Poseidon (Toby Stephens).

Percy awakens in the truck Ares provided to him and his friends, which is transporting animals to Las Vegas. He and Annabeth send an Iris message to try to contact Chiron (Glynn Turman) at Camp Half-Blood, but instead reach Luke (Charlie Bushnell), who tells them that the campers are preparing for war.

Luke quickly agrees when Percy and Annabeth suspect that Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn), Ares’ daughter, is the lightning thief. He also picks up on Percy and Annabeth’s growing connection as they bicker over the events of the last several days. But as Percy begins to ask Luke for help regarding their upcoming meeting with his dad, Hermes (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Annabeth ends the call.

Percy, Annabeth, and Grover Arrive at the Lotus Casino

After releasing the animals in the streets of Las Vegas, they enter the Lotus Casino as Dua Lipa‘s “Levitating” blares. Grover reminds Percy of The Odyssey, the ancient epic in which Odysseus encounters men who forget everything about their lives after eating lotus flowers. They vow not to eat anything in the casino and set out to find Hermes.

Inside the casino, the trio split up, with Percy and Annabeth searching in one direction and Grover in the other. Annabeth reveals that she met both of Luke’s parents while traveling with Luke, Grover, and Thalia.

She tells Percy that Luke’s mother could see the future and saw something that damaged her mind and that Luke blames Hermes. She says she thinks Hermes would do anything to win Luke back. Percy then tells Annabeth about his recent dreams.

As Percy Jackson and the Olympians continues, Grover sees an old satyr acquaintance of his Uncle Ferdinand named Augustus (Ted Dykstra). Augustus seems to have lost his memory but claims to be close to finding the lost god, Pan. Grover realizes Augustus is losing his memory even though he hasn’t eaten any lotus flowers, but as he tries to piece together what’s happening, his own memory begins to slip away.

Percy and Annabeth find Hermes playing craps. The unassuming deity knows why they’ve come to see him, but he tells them they’re going to walk away disappointed. Annabeth brings up Luke, and Hermes deflates a bit before pulling them into a nearby room.

Hermes remembers Annabeth being there during his last tense conversation with Luke but says he can’t help her and her friends. Annabeth tells him that Luke could forgive him if he helps them. Hermes reveals Poseidon warned him to stay away from Luke, as his presence would make things worse — and it did. Percy wonders why Poseidon would ask to meet with him if their meeting would make things worse.

The Olympian replies that it’s hard for a god to feel powerless. He then says it won’t make much difference anyway, glancing at his watch. Percy realizes that the casino pumps lotus flower scent through the vents, which causes memory loss. Several days have passed since they entered the casino and now they’re in danger of missing the summer solstice deadline for retrieving the Master Bolt.

Annabeth reveals she stole the keys to Hermes’ magical car, which can instantly transport them anywhere. They find a nearly completely mind-wiped Grover playing a virtual reality game and search for the vehicle. After taking Hermes’ car, the trio find themselves in Santa Monica, where Poseidon said he’d meet with Percy.

Percy goes for a swim in the Pacific Ocean and meets a water nymph called a Nereid (Jelena Milinkovic). The water spirit tells Percy that he missed the deadline and that Poseidon waited as long as he could but is now preparing for war against Zeus. She tells him to go back to camp, but Percy is determined to finish his quest.

The Nereid hands Percy four pearls and tells him that each allows one person to return from the Underworld. Percy wonders why she gave him four pearls. In the closing moments of Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ sixth episode, the Nereid tells him the fourth is so he can rescue his mother.

Percy Continues His Failed Quest

'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Episode 6 Recap: What Happens in Vegas... (5)

After arguably the series’ best entry to date, Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 6 is a slower-paced affair. It makes several deviations from one of the book’s most iconic chapters, some of which work better than others. It also plants seeds for future seasons while explaining the complex relationships between the gods and their half-human children, which will likely play a role in the season’s final two episodes.
