I never liked this as a kid... but revisiting it now it's quite a good ride. All the characters are great and there's some pretty good dry humour from Bill Murray. I honestly think the new Ghostbuster movies forget that this isn't about ghosts.

my absolute favorite film as a kid, and i gain more appreciation for it on every rewatch. this initial entry into what would become a pretty massive franchise has this uniquely farcical energy - i feel like contemporary marketing intended to present this as yr standard goofy 80s comedy w/ a horror twist, but instead it’s had a lasting impact on culture bc of it’s true beating heart at the center. strangely warm for a film abt dead ppl that takes place in nyc. from the moment they’re introduced, u legitimately care for all of these characters, and i think that’s why they’ve provided ample material for lore development. u can appreciate this film for simply being a quirky, snappily written comedy, or u can just as easily dive into all the parapsychological significance of the world it creates. visually, it’s one of the first times where i actively noticed rly evocative cinematography, and (barring a couple noticeable but charming blue-screen moments) the effects still look fantastic. it rly is a classic no matter how u slice it, and i’m glad that ppl still hold it in high regard

A childhood favorite of mine that still holds the f*ck up. I love this film. It’s hilarious and warm and spooky and 80s and it’s awesome. The cinematography looks so good and all the technical work is nice and casual. Ghostbusters is absurd and fun — the classic film creates a unique tone and keeps it up, no sweat. Endless good one-liners and snickers.

Isn't much of a comedy for the first two acts, and initial premise of workaday paranormal exterminators seems at first wasted. I'm left wanting for more details about these characters and what drives them to take such a technical approach to the spiritual, I want to see them test out their equipment and build their business (the scrappy working class, DIY aesthetic being one of the standout elements of the film.) For his reputation as a dry comic Bill Murray feels attention seeking here, like a soggy Groucho Marx. As screenwriters, I'm surprised Aykroyd and Ramis' characters aren't more fleshed out, glimpses of Stanz's puppy-dog act being the most interesting. The cramped establishing scenes are forgivable when the third act with Gozer and the Keymaster kick in at roughly the 50% mark, which is where I assume most of the creative energy went. The otherwise flat, stereotyped Sigourney and Moranis become suddenly hilarious, the practical effects and 80s synth funk have aged gracefully into a vintage cheese. Whether this was meant to be a one off idea, or they were franchise building, I can't name many wide-release pictures with such originality or high occult weirdness. Deserving of it's huge merchandising identity more than most of the remembered properties from this era.

I love this film. Like, seriously, how can you not? It's fun, it's cheesy, at times it's actually terrifying, but the main cast are so brilliant and hilarious in their roles, it's hard not to enjoy.

Bill Murray and a pile of nothing
It's interesting how often this film presents the viewer with a pile of nothing, whether it's ectoplasm, invisible ghosts, or marshmallow drippings. Because these images so perfectly represent this hollow and thoughtless film. It's got a lacklustre script and lame effects (even for 1984). The one up-side is Bill Murray improvising. If that's all the film was, it would be quite good, but also about 15 minutes long. All a comedy has to do is make me laugh. I chuckled once. Then there's the matter of ideology. This film represents a new low even for the vacuous, money-obsessed, sexually naive Hollywood. Women are simply objects, people's merit is based on how well they work, and everyone is expected to toe the line. Several (non-funny) scenes are included in the plot for the express purpose of making this clear. Sad.

I won't lie: making the EPA the villain rubs me the wrong way (has anyone ever written about how much Hollywood in the 1980s seemed to absorb the prevailing consumerist-free market politics instead of challenging it?). That's a minor, though real quibble. Ghostbusters mostly holds up better than its special effects. I do wish though that every scene was as funny as the ones with Rick Moranis. Every thing he does and says in this is just gold.
